An interpreter is required for marriage registration if one of the spouses is a foreign citizen. At the discretion of the Civil Registry Office (ZAGS), an interpreter may not be required if the foreigner speaks Russian.

Types of Interpretation

There are several types of interpretation:

1)  Consecutive Interpretation (one-way and two-way). If the interpreter translates from his native language into a foreign language or vice versa, this type of interpretation is called one-way. If a specialist translates from both a foreign language and a native language at a meeting, then the interpretation is two-way.

2)  Simultaneous Interpretation – a rather complex type of interpretation requiring the use of specific technical equipment.

The advantage of consecutive interpretation over simultaneous interpretation is that consecutive interpretation can be done anywhere, including on the road, at off-site locations, etc. It requires no technical equipment and can be performed by just one interpreter. Simultaneous interpretation, on the other hand, requires being in a specific location due to the installed equipment. More than one interpreter is always required in the simultaneous interpretation booth at an event. However, for large and formal events, simultaneous interpretation saves time and allows for interpretation into several languages at once.

3. Chuchotage (Whispering) – a type of interpretation performed for 1-2 listeners. In this case, the interpreter sits or stands nearby and whispers the interpretation, no technical equipment is used.

It should be noted that simultaneous interpretation is naturally more expensive than consecutive interpretation for obvious reasons: the work of more than one interpreter and the use of special equipment.

The choice of interpretation type depends on the type of event planned. High-level meetings nowadays rarely take place without simultaneous interpreters. However, such events require advance preparation. It is crucial for the interpreter to familiarize himself with the materials, and if possible, meet the speakers beforehand and study all names, figures, and titles in the reports to avoid unpleasant situations with the interpretation.
